DMB-13-05, Delaware Memorial Bridge Towers
Cleaning & Painting
2015 ASHE Project of the Year- Adaptability to Dynamic Circumstances & Commitment to Safety
2015 ASHE Project of the Year- People’s Choice Award
Blast clean all existing paint from the entire portion of the exterior of the steel towers at the Delaware Memorial Bridge, 1st and 2nd structure suspensions towers. All four tower legs had over 70 mils of old paint to be removed. We installed a tower scaffold system designed to withstand 100mph winds. Abrasive blast cleaning and painting of all four of the 430’ tall suspension span towers of the Delaware Memorial Bridge was a project that was accomplished with great partnering efforts between Blastech and the Delaware River and Bay Authority. The original lead based paint had been over coated on a ten year cycle leaving over 70 mils of existing paint adding to the dead load of the structures. The existing paint had to be abrasive blast cleaned to a near white metal before receiving a new four coat moisture cure urethane paint system. Access to the towers including the overhead platform was engineered by Blastech which allowed two entire towers to be completely scaffold at one time. This allowed our painters access to blast clean and paint each tower in a seamless manner. Aggressive scheduling and increased man power of over 65 workers on the project at any one time allowed Blastech to complete this monumental task in one painting season (10 Months)- ahead of schedule and under budget, and received the Project of the Year, and People’s Choice award on this project.

Carter Bridge-Brooks Street Interchange
This project will perform comprehensive replacement of the coatings systems on the structural steel members of 15-bridge structures across the Carter Bridge – Brooks Street Interchange in Charleston, WV over the Kanawha River. Using the access platforms installed for the cleaning and painting work, perform miscellaneous steel repairs and install bridge labeling on steel and concrete members. A two coat, Polysiloxane paint system was used on all 15-structures. The Maintenance of Traffic was extemely challenging with many ramp detours, and nighttime closures that needed to be coordinated. There were several trades on the project that ranged from industrial bridge painters, demolition, concrete repair, and steel repair. The project is still in progress to be fully complete, but is substantially complete at this time.

MDOT, US84 Mississippi River Bridge Cleaning, Painting, and Pin Replacement
This project included necessary construction services which primarily consisted of cleaning (near white finish) and painting the cantilever through-truss and steel approach spans on the westbound US 84 Mississippi River Bridge in Adams County and Concordia Parish and disposing of the paint. Additional services included were the installation of temporary restraints and replacement of the existing pins and links on the westbound cantilever through-truss at six (6) locations, removal of existing crossovers, performance of roadway work and miscellaneous construction items, and making other repairs on the westbound US 84 Mississippi River Bridge. The rehabilitation of this historic bridge was scheduled for a little over two years, (750) calendar days, which included one full year (365) days of complete closure of the westbound bridge. Traffic was diverted to the eastbound bridge by way of temporary crossovers during this yearlong closure to eliminate any unwanted load on the structure while six (6) of the links which held the truss spans together were replaced and the abrasive blasting, steel repairs and painting of the structure took place. As the prime contractor, Blastech Enterprises conducted weekly site meetings, monthly partner meetings and progress meetings with the subcontractors and state officials to coordinate efforts in facilitating these repairs. Throughout the year long closure, adversity was faced and overcome including two named storms directly affecting the project and a prolonged winter period which delayed the start of the pin and link replacements. Through the partnering process with MDOT and the subcontractors, the project was completed in eighteen (18) months which was seven (7) months ahead of the allowable time.

BB2638, Chesapeake Bay Bridge, Phase III
The scope of work under this contract with the MdTA included cleaning and painting all steel members, excluding the existing rail that is not being replaced. The limits of cleaning and painting included all internal surfaces of box-shaped members accessed through man-holes, up to and including the exposed sides of the seal plates. Replacing bottom rail (the third rail from top) on both sides of the entire bridge excluding the suspension spans and the through Truss Cantilever Spans and perform miscellaneous structural repairs.
